(led by K-ban) we played 4 rounds of this 1988 Alex Randolph classic bluffing card game while waiting for a late arrival.
(led by Sean) 2020 release that combines open drafting and worker placement in a game of exploration, resource management, and discovery. In addition to traditional deck-builder effects, cards can also be used to place workers, and new worker actions become available as players explore the island. Some of these actions require resources instead of workers, so building a solid resource base will be essential. You are limited to only one action per turn, so make your choice carefully… what action will benefit you most now? And what can you afford to do later… assuming someone else doesn’t take the action first!?
Decks are small, and randomness in the game is heavily mitigated by the wealth of tactical decisions offered on the game board. With a variety of worker actions, artifacts, and equipment cards, the set-up for each game will be unique, encouraging players to explore new strategies to meet the challenge.
2x (led by K-ban) 2021 Roll & Write with a modular board as players are Scandinavian tour guides getting groups of tourists to their preferred attractions.. Each round starts by rolling dice into a common pool. Simultaneously, each player chooses one die of one specific color (without physically taking it) and fills seats on the matching guiding boat on their own player sheet. Whenever they have completed a row of seats, they have sold a group ticket of the corresponding color (excursion). The longer the row, the more points they get. Additionally, this ticket is valid for the remainder of the game: Every time they go on an excursion in a village of this color, they take this group with them to earn even more points. The player with the most points wins the game.
Each dice color represents tourists with a preference for one specific type of excursion. The transparent green die is “wild” and represents the northern lights, something everyone wants to see.
Within each guide boat, you need to score higher and higher on excursions, so taking too many tourists on your first excursions could be fateful. It took us a while to get the hang of this crunchy game, so we decided to play it twice.
There is a novel dice rule based on the median roll….which both determines the main ship’s movement as well as the current temperature.
(led by K-ban) Friedemann Friese’s 1995 asymmetrical trick taking card game, Foppen, that expanded to accommodate 8 players in 2018 as Fool. Your goal is to shed your hand of cards but the lowest card in any trick receives the green Fool token and has to sit out the next hand. We got to play 3 hands before hitting our 10 PM curfew. All of FF’s games start with an ‘F’ and have green boxes….as FF has green hair. We need to get his classic Powergrid (Funkenschlag in German) to the table.
(led by Sean) 2022 2-3 player dice-rolling, area-majority game with a little direct-competition edge. Find the best spots for your seeds to grow across a variety of gardens.
Players roll a group of dice, then choose one to move to a beautiful garden. Along the way, players can harness the power of the wind with three special actions — float, puff, and gust — to get the most points. The game ends after all the dice are used, and whoever receives the most victory points as combined from two different scoring methods wins.
